Farmfair International 2008, Edmonton, Alberta
Grand Champion Polled Hereford Female
Tlell 36N Kema 8S with her bull calf Tlell 6S Offshore 6U at side
Tlell Polled Herefords, from the Richardson Ranch on the Queen Charlotte Islands, were winners of the Polled Hereford Grand Champion Female at the Farmfair International’s Western National Hereford Show in Edmonton on November 4, 2008.
Don and Leslie Richardson traveled two days from the islands, starting with a 10 hour ferry ride to Prince Rupert, to show their cattle at Farmfair International for the third consecutive year. Their success in the Polled Hereford show ring included the Senior Champion cow and the Reserve Champion Heifer calf as well as the Premiere Breeder and the Premiere Exhibitor Awards.
The Richardson’s also showed both the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Hereford Bull calf as well as the Reserve Champion Hereford Heifer calf in the Legend’s of the Fall Event, an all breed calf show.
Both the Grand Champion cow, and her bull calf, winner of the Legends of the Fall Hereford class, qualified for the Supreme Show on Saturday, Nov 8th. A panel of six judges worked independently to pick both a male and female Supreme Champion with each winner taking home a New Dodge 4X4 truck. This year, for the first time, the attached aluminum stock trailers were awarded by a draw from all participants in the Supreme Show and although they didn’t win, the Richardson’s had qualified for both the Male Supreme and the Female Supreme draw.
With seven head in their string they also participated in the new Hereford Genes Event which saw the who’s who of Western Canada’s commercial buyers attend this display of twenty four Hereford bulls on November 4th. Each bull represented a different Hereford breeding unit from across Western Canada. After a great Hereford steak supper and the finals of the Ranch Rodeo, including a performance by Baxter Black, a draw was made for one of these guests to win one of the bulls on display. This event was credited for the Hereford breed seeing an increase in participation at Farmfair in 2008. Across all other breeds, Farmfair International saw fewer breeders display their cattle this year. Many commented on the escalating costs to attend a 7-8 days show as well as the disappointing returns in the cattle industry in past few years as the reason for this decrease in exhibits.
Their success this year made the Richardson’s drive back to BC seem much shorter. Even the 8 hour weather delay in Prince Rupert, waiting for the seven meter seas to subside before crossing the Hecate Strait on BC Ferries, couldn’t dampen their enthusiasim!
